1. Add sugar to a plate and mix in the zest manually until the sugar is tinted yellow.
2. Wet the rim of the martini glass with lemon juice, and twist the edge of the glass onto the plate to coat it with sugar.
3. Add vodka, Cointreau, lemon juice, simple syrup to a cocktail shaker and shake with ice.
4. Strain into the martini glass and serve.
